PRESS RELEASE 2010-01-11WHO’D HAVE THAWT IT?THOUSANDS HEAD TO ABSOLUT ICEBAR LONDON DESPITE SUBZERO TEMPERATURESDetermined not to let the plummeting temperatures, transport chaos and frozen walkways ruin their New Year fun, thousands of hardy guests headed to the ABSOLUT ICEBAR LONDON last week to bask in warmer temperatures. With much of the UK blanketed in heavy snow and temperatures in some parts dropping to as low as -20°C, the country was on course for its coldest winter in 30 years. Yet despite the Met Office issuing an alert warning that nearly half a metre of snow was due to fall in some areas, ABSOLUT ICEBAR LONDON experienced it’s busiest start to a January trading period in over three years. The conditions proved a welcome distraction as guests found themselves in the unusual situation of actually feeling warmer inside the bar, which is famed for being the coolest bar in the UK. Chilled to a constant -5°C, everything in the bar is built from pure ice harvested from the Torne River, Northern Sweden – from the walls, the stools, to the artwork. Even the ‘glasses’ in which the vodka drinks are served are made of ice.“We are surprised and delighted to have welcomed over 2000 guests this week despite the challenging weather and travel conditions, in what is typically a quiet week of the year, making for a very welcome start to 2010.” said Matthieu Bourgogne, General Manager, ABSOLUT ICEBAR LONDON.HOW COLD IS IT?-5°C Coldest bar in UK, ABSOLUT ICEBAR LONDON-9°C Coldest hotel on earth, ICEHOTEL, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden-27.2°C Coldest ever recorded in UK, Altnaharra, Scotland(Recorded on 30th December 1995)-40°C Coldest mountain on earth, Denali, Alaska, USA-89.2°C Coldest place ever recorded on earth, Vostok Station, Russia (recorded on 21st July, 1983)-252.7°C Coldest substance known to man, Liquid Hydrogen-273.2°C Absolute Zero, the lowest temperature theoretically attainable.
